A subdomain is a unique subsection or division of a larger, primary domain name. It operates as an extension of the main domain, allowing for distinct organization and content separation while remaining technically under the same registered domain.

The standard structure of a subdomain is as follows:
- subdomain.maindomain.com
Purpose and Utility
Subdomains offer clients the ability to create completely separate websites or sections with memorable, human-readable names without the requirement of registering and maintaining multiple distinct domain names.
For example, if the primary website is called yourdomain.com, a client can establish a separate discussion area using the address forums.yourdomain.com. Other common examples include blog.yourdomain.com or shop.yourdomain.com.
