How to Password Protect a Folder in cPanel

This guide explains how to restrict access to specific directories on your website using a username and password, enhancing the security of sensitive content.


Part 1: Accessing the Protection Tool

  1. Log in to your cPanel account.
  2. Navigate to the Security category and click on the Password Protect Directories link.

Part 2: Selecting and Enabling Protection

  1. A prompt will appear asking you to specify the directory location. The default location should be acceptable for most users.
  2. Select the specific folder you wish to apply password protection to.
  3. Configure the required directory protection details:
    • Password protect this directory - Toggle this setting to enable or disable the protection.
    • Name the protected directory - Provide a visible label for the directory, which will appear on the authorization prompt.
  4. Click the Save button to apply these directory protection settings.

Part 3: Creating an Authorized User

  1. Enter the necessary authorization information to grant a user access to the directory:
    • Username - Define a username for the person accessing the folder.
    • Password - Choose a password for this user.
    • Password (Again) - Reconfirm the chosen password.
  2. Click the Add/modify authorized user button to save the new user credentials and finalize the protected area setup.
The selected directory is now password protected, and only authorized users can access its contents.
