How to Add MX Records in cPanel | Custom Email Routing Print

  • 0

MX Records (Mail Exchanger Records) are a critical type of **DNS record** that tells the internet which mail servers are responsible for receiving email messages on behalf of your domain. You usually need to update these when you decide to use an email service hosted outside of your main web hosting provider (e.g., using a third-party email service or setting up a backup mail server).

This video provides a straightforward, step-by-step guide on how to add a custom MX Entry in cPanel.

⚙️ MX Record Setup Steps in cPanel

  1. Log into your **cPanel** account (featured here by BCHost.com).
  2. Navigate to the **Email** section and click the **MX Entry** icon.
  3. Select the **Domain** you want to configure from the dropdown menu.
  4. Scroll down to the **Add New Record** section (or equivalent area).
  5. Enter the **Priority number**.
Remember: A **lower number** means **higher priority**. The system will try to deliver to the lowest priority number first. If you have multiple records, delivery will attempt the lowest number, then the next lowest, and so on.
  6. Enter the **Destination** mail server address (e.g., `mx1.myexchange.com`), which is provided by your external email host.
  7. Click **Add New Record**.

Once saved, your domain's email will be routed according to the priority order of the MX records listed!
